Frequently asked questions
What makes Burdy different from a regular charcoal grill?
Burdy is a fan-powered grill with a patent-pending airflow system. The fan supplies the coals with air for fast starting and temperature boosts while cooking. We put a grate for fire starters directly below the charcoal grate to make lighting super easy and reliable.
We also rethought the way ash is collected and managed so it doesn't interfere with airflow and only needs to be dealt with every ten cooks or so. Every part of the ritual — ignition, startup, fuel, and cleanup — is engineered to work together, so nothing stands between you and the coal bed.
What is the FireStoke System?
It's the patent-pending airflow architecture at the heart of Burdy. A fan directs a ring of air precisely onto the coal bed — active and engineered, not the passive vents of a kamado, kettle, or a separate chimney. That directed airflow is what gets charcoal lit in under ten minutes.
The FireStoke fan is controlled with a simple push-button and rotary speed switch. A built in processor turns off the fan so you don't accidentally turn your grill into a forge. It's all powered by a 12-volt, plug-in recharegable battery.
Do I have to use coconut charcoal?
No, that would be so annoying! Burdy isn't a closed fuel system. If you already love a particular lump, briquette, or specialty fuel, use it — you'll still get reliable lighting, fan-powered stoking, and simple ash cleanup.
We love using all kinds of charcoal in the Burdy. But after testing dozens of kinds of charcoal, high-density coconut cubes have become our favorite to work with and cook on. The heat is high and even, the smoke is neutral and minimal, and they provide an extended burn.
Why coconut charcoal?
Coconut shell charcoal burns hotter and cleaner than standard charcoal. It produces less ash, holds heat longer, and imparts no off-flavors. It's also made from an agricultural byproduct — a cleaner-burning fuel by every measure.
How many cooks per 1KG box of Burdy Charcoal?
One 1kg box of Burdy coconut charcoal contains enough charcoal for 1-2 cooks. A full box will create a large, high-heat searing zone that will burn strong for well over an hour.
When using indirect methods and incorporating the lid, a half-box often supplies ample fuel. It all depends on the amount of food being cooked and duration of the cook. Burdy coals are great for both quick week night grill sessions and extended party sessions.
When cooking quick meals, get the most out of your fuel by closing the lid and lid-vent after cooking; choking of the airflow will extinguish the coals and whatever is left can be reused in your next cook.
How long until I'm cooking?
After lighting the starters and loading the coals, you can be ready to cook in under ten minutes. Time to cooking will depend on the number and type or fire starters and the quantity and type of charcoal used.
Lump charcoal: typically cooking-ready in 7-8 minutes.
Briquette charcoal: typically cooking-ready in 8-10 minutes.
Coconut cubes: typically cooking-ready in 10-12 minutes.
Coconut logs: typically cooking-ready in 12-15 minutes.
Fire starters take 3-5 minutes to burn and catch the coals. And we typically run the FireStoke fan for 4-8 minutes.
How does ash cleanup work?
The FireStoke system directs air toward the coal bed from the side so ash never blocks the airflow — so there's no scooping before every cook. Simply sweep spent ash down into the built-in bin and empty it out after about ten cooks. The bin can be used as is or with optional disposable liners, which make grease and ash clean up extremely simple.
Is it portable?
Yes. Burdy is designed for the patio but it's light enough to grab and go. The controller runs on a 12-volt, plug-in rechargeable battery, so it goes wherever the grill goes — tailgate, beach, or backyard.
Will you offer a charcoal subscription?
Yes. You'll be able to order it whenever you choose or select a subscription and choose how often premium coconut charcoal is delivered — including options infused with hickory, maple, or other woods for the right note of flavor.
When can I buy one?
Burdy launches September 15, 2026 on Kickstarter where you can pre-order a Burdy Grill from our first production run. The order window for our first production run will be September 15 to October 15. We build the Burdy in controlled batches to control quality so availability will be limited.
Subscribers will receive early access to the Kickstarter. Drop your email in the bar below.
What is the Founders Club?
Joining the Founders Club guarantees you the opportunity to buy a grill from our first production run. When we launch on Kickstarter on September 15th the number of available grills will be limited. Quantities will be limited because the overall size of our initial production run will be limited so that we can fulfill on time and manage quality.
The cost of the Founders Club membership gets credited to members who purchase a grill from the Kickstarter. If the Kickstarter fails, everyone who bought a membership will have their membership fee refunded.
Is it ready to manufacture?
Yes, it is! Bo and Ted have been working for the past to dial the design for manufacturing and setup all of the necessary partnerships to ship finished grills.
We've produced dozens of samples with our manufacturing partners improving parts with iterative development. Ted has already taken two trips to China to work directly with our manufacturing partners. See pictures and ready about his travels here.
We're so excited to kick off the first production run!
What is Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform for creative projects and product launches. Project creators set a funding goal and offer rewards in exchange for funds during a 30-day-long campaign.
At the end of 30 days, if the goal is met, the project creators collect funds and fulfill the promised rewards. If the goal is not met, the project is cancelled and no funds are collected.
Kickstarter helps startups and independent creatives get projects off the ground with funding provided by the community.
Burdy will be offering grills, charcoal, and accessories as rewards. By backing Burdy on Kickstarter you will provide the funding needed to initiate the first production run.
Bo and Ted have already completed several successful Kickstarters. They've been working on Burdy full-time for the better part of a year and have put an enormous amount of work and investment into preparing it for production.
